Anomalous ENSO Occurrences: An Alternate View*

چکیده
There has been an apparent increase in the frequency and duration of El Niño–Southern Oscillation events in the last two decades relative to the prior period of record. Furthermore, 1990–95 was the longest period of sustained high Darwin sea level pressure in the instrumental record. Variations in the frequency and duration of such events are of considerable interest because of their implications for understanding global climatic variability and also the possibility that the climate system may be changing due to external factors such as the increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Nonparametric statistical methods for time series analysis are applied to a 1882 to 1995 seasonal Darwin sea level pressure (DSLP) anomaly time series to explore the variations in El Niño–like anomaly occurrence and persistence over the period of record. Return periods for the duration of the 1990–95 event are estimated to be considerably smaller than those recently obtained by Trenberth and Hoar using a linear ARMA model with the same time series. The likelihood of a positive anomaly of the DSLP, as well as its persistence, is found to exhibit decadalto centennial-scale variability and was nearly as high at the end of the last century as it has been recently. The 1990–95 event has a much lower return period if the analysis is based on the 1882–1921 DSLP data. The authors suggest that conclusions that the 1990–95 event may be an effect of greenhouse gas–induced warming be tempered by a recognition of the natural variability

A Near-Annual Pacific Ocean Basin Mode
Some fairly regular and nearly annual variability in the equatorial Pacific after the major 1997/98 El Niño event is studied. Sea level, sea surface temperature (SST), and surface wind anomalies of this variability are tied together in a way similar to the slow cycles of El Niño–Southern Oscillations (ENSO). Despite a slightly longer-than-annual time scale, similar variability was also found in...
متن کاملENSO Anomalies over the Western United States: Present and Future Patterns in Regional Climate Simulations
Surface temperature, precipitation, specific humidity and wind anomalies associated with the warm and cold phases of ENSO simulated by WRF and HadRM are examined for the present and future decades. WRF is driven by ECHAM5 and CCSM3, respectively, and HadRM is driven by HadCM3. For the current decades, the ECHAM5-WRF, CCSM3-WRF and HadRM simulations are broadly consistent with the observed warm-...
متن کاملDynamical Mechanisms for the Teleconnection between ENSO and NAO in Late Winter
The dynamical mechanisms for the late-winter teleconnection between El NiñoSouthern Oscillation (ENSO) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) are examined using output from two global climate models and various reanalysis datasets. During El Niño winters, the intensified transient disturbances along the equatorward shifted North Pacific storm track extend their influences farther downstream, ...
متن کاملImpact of the 1997/98 ENSO on upper ocean characteristics in Marguerite Bay, western Antarctic Peninsula
[1] A year-round sequence of hydrographic casts is used to trace the evolution of the upper ocean waters in Marguerite Bay, western Antarctic Peninsula (wAP), between 1998 and 2002. Winter 1998 was anomalous, showing an unusually deep mixed layer that became progressively more saline until spring, reaching salinities as high as 34.0. The remnant of this mixed layer (the Winter Water, WW) was th...
متن کاملEl nino-southern oscillation events recorded in the stratigraphy of the tropical quelccaya ice cap, peru.
Snow accumulation measured during 1982-1983 on the Quelccaya ice cap, Peru, was 70 percent of the average from 1975 through 1983. Inspection of 19 years (1964 through 1983) of accumulation measured near the summit of Quelccaya reveals a substantial decrease ( approximately 30 percent) in association with the last five El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) occurrences in the equatorial Pacific. Th...
